WHAT IS INTARSIA?
Intarsia comes from a 15th century Italian art form. It was orginally practiced as a pictorial
inlay, similar to marquetry, applied to paneling and furniture.
Today's intarsia
creates a true 3-dimensional art form of realistic landscape, still life or animal imagery.
Tom the Sawyer
has perfected this rarely used art form in his wood designs. He uses many different kinds of North
American, South American, African and Asian hardwoods, such as, but not limited to, red cedar, aspen, mahogany,
purpleheart, rosewood, poplar and walnut, so he can obtain different colors, hues and shading to complete each unique
piece of art. Truly no two pieces are alike, with each design a custom piece!

Tom the Sawyer is a woodcrafter who is known for his unique &
intricate intarsia wood designs. Cutting each hardwood piece with a scroll saw, and then sanding & shaping the art work
takes a keen eye, as well as a lot of patience to create each one-of-a-kind, 3-dimensional piece. In addition to intarsia,
Tom also hand turns pens of wood, acrylic or combinations of these materials. Tom’s workshop and home are located
in Oceanside, California.
